Harry Potter must die

September 18th 2006 12:39
I have never done this before but everyone has a first time. I am going throw my hat into the ring and start speculating how and when Harry Potter will die. It’s plain Rowling has decided to kill Harry. I had my suspicions when I read The Half-Blood Prince.

It’s this song by Horace Slughorn that made the alarm bells ring:

And Odo the hero, they bore him back home
To the place that he’d known as a lad,
They laid him to rest with his hat inside out
And his wand snapped in two, which was sad.’

Why include this song if not to give us a hint that Harry might be Odo? Well, I didn’t think much about it after ward until I read the recent updates JKR made to website. This is what she had to say:

Now that I'm back from New York, the only real news is that I'm continuing to work hard on the book. I've done quite a lot, and I'm really enjoying it, though every now and then I look up and realise that it's THE LAST ONE. You might think I'd have got used to that idea during the sixteen years I've been planning seven books, but it still keeps hitting me... no more Harry after this... and then I bury myself in book seven again and tell myself I've still got plenty to write.

Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter

The heightened security restrictions on the airlines in August made the journey back from New York interesting, as I refused to be parted from the manuscript of book seven (a large part of it is handwritten, and there was no copy of anything I had done while in the US). They let me take it on, thankfully, bound up in elastic bands. I don't know what I would have done if they hadn't; sailed home, probably.

I am currently trying to decide between two possible titles. I was quite happy with one of them until the other one struck me while I was taking a shower in New York. They would both be appropriate, so I think I'll have to wait until I'm further into the book to decide which one works best.

No more Harry...Can it be any plainer? There Harry, you’re a goner, mate.

Most people assume that it is Voldemort who is going to kill Harry. And if Harry has to die, then Voldemort has to live, according to the prediction. Even JKR won’t be that bad to let evil triumph right? Wrong. Because Voldemort is not the only one who is after Harry. There is Snape, there is Draco, there is Bella and not to mention a bunch of death eaters waiting for Harry. I think Harry will vanquish Voldie but die by some other means.

I don't like your prediction. But a very nice read.

Convincing argument indeed. I just wonder if Rowling has us right where she wants us (i.e.: eating red-herring sandwiches).

Thanks, anonymous. To be frank, I am not sure if I like myself or not. It depends on how he dies, i suppose.

Thanks Jas. Probably. Me too am half-serious about these "predictions." I think Rowling too clever for her or our own good.

I heard (somewhere) that she probably would kill him off to prevent spin off's from other writers. True or not I don't know.

I hope harry potter dies a very painful and grotesque way so that when it is finally made into a movie I can for once enjoy it.

Thanks cinico.
Yeah she did something like that. Tthat the idea of sombody else writing a spinoff gives an added incentive to kill Harry

Thanks Ahmed.
Harry has had a rather painful life. More torture would be indecent.

is it really? I really didn't like the harry potter movies myself so I'd rather he die painfully... it would be appropriate anyway.

Umm I dont like the movies myself. But the books are a different matter. Why appropriate?

Comment by Ahmed

September 19th 2006 15:53
Well harry potter has gained popularity from living a life of mysery and suffering, its only appropriate that if he were to depart this world it would be through a myserable way.

I can't stand Harry Potter. The books or the films.
The sooner he jumps off this mortal coil the better, as far as I'm concerned.

I think the person dying is Ron. Hopefully he'll die doing some heroic deed, that way he'll finally be out of Harry's shadow and then Harry will be free to crack on to his best mate's woman.... Sick I know. But it would make for a good 8th book.

Hey Michael B,
There won't be an 8th book. Your idea is good and many people have speculated that Ron might cop it out too. But right now, the odds are stacked against Harry.
Finally, it was Hermione's bday yesterday. Happy B'day Hermione.

Cinico, I've heard the same thing, that some writers kill off their characters so that other authors can't use them in their works.

I figured she might end it for him anyway - I always saw it as that harry and Voldemort would have their final battle for both of them, in other words, Harry vanquishes Voldemort, but at the same time sustains a fatal or very serious blow leading to the end of his life. But then maybe he will be happy anyway being at last back with his parents.

How about this scenario: Harry dies, then, Buffy or Jesus-style, gets resurrected?

Possibly with a loss of magical powers along the way.

I am thinking of a possible matrix style ending, were harry dies and because there is nothing lef to fill the void all his enemies die as well.

This is of course after harry has sex with that girl he's always with (I bet it will happen) to add some controversy to the mix. "Well its just a fact of life" JKR will say as the last harry potter novel shoots into the all time best sellers list of all time

Ah, so Harry finally gets to use his "magic wand". *wink wink* I don't think that would be kiddie-friendly, though. Mild violence, they can handle, but I'm betting the parents wouldn't agree to mild sexual references.

\I was thinking of a complete porno orgy with lots of magic to boot.

I think JKR is going to want to go out with a bang. and just think if harry dies a virgin how many eyebros that'll raise.

But he's already had sex. he snogged cho and he snogged ginny who is a sex freak if ever there was one. he's also had drugs. hes had that felix thingy. its just that jkr dont want to put it explicitly

has he really? I'm not too big a fan of the books so I wouldn't know. Is it just an obscure interpretation or are you just teasing me?

Oh goodness gracious...

I am kind of shocked with the comments here. LOL...

Harry Potter's book started as a children's book, doesn't fit the logic to be too adult in the last episode. This would have given a lot of bad comments from the parents side.

I would have the feeling that both Harry and Voldemort would have to die, because they are like the light and darkness. If there isn't darkness, there won't have light either.

Ron and Hermione would probably ended up together but how it is, I really have to read the stories again. LOL

Yes, the books are very much different from the movies. I didn't even watch "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" movie. That has shown how dissapointed since the 3rd one.

Nevertheless, I guess JKR would know how to finish the book nicely. Since it is the last one it should be a lot of thoughts to it.

Thanks everybody for comments here.

Jessica, I agree wih your comments. These books are written for the children even though some adults cannot stop reading them and I don't think Rowling would do anything to scandalise her primary audience.

Thinking about the whole issue though, A.S.Byatt once said the adults who read harry Potter are still in their latency period and are childish adults. You can read my rejoinder in this review.

Adrian And Ahmed, I don't think Harry will be killed and resurrected. In Rowling's world death is final and most of the evil is caused by trying artificially prolong life. Some other fictional means must be employed. Any suggestions?

Probably even Harry dies he might end up like Nearly Headless Nick if he doesn't die under Avrada Kedava, floating around and be one of the ghost that guards Hogwards for the longest time. Well Moaning Myrtle would be happy then. LOL...

But then again, how fiction will it be in this magical world? I still have no idea about it.

That would be interesting for next year.

However the "hot from the oven" books are soooo expensive and I do wonder this time I can afford to go there and queue and get the hot final series of this book and get it done reading once and for all!

hahahaha...

Very true. Hot cakes like this will just lure you. But I think I better start reading the 6th book first to refresh my memory. But it was so sad to know that Dumbeldore had to die, but I suppose it was logical with all the comotion ever since Voldemort turn to a full physical form.
